The three New Testament passages that comment on Cain appear to place him among the unredeemed. In Hebrews 11 where faith is a great theme Cain is the opposite of Abel in his sacrifice and apparently not a man of faith. The focus is on Abel, but the contrast seems clearly to be made. Likewise in 1 John 3:12–15, Cain as a man whose pattern was hate and his product murder illustrates John’s point, “no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.” Cain’s whole characteristic trend was a dogged defiance
